🥣 Dip: Best with Mayoketchup, Garlic Sauce or Lely’s Family Sauce!
Tostones are one of my favorite sides and a classic accompaniment to almost any main course. Personally, I love enjoying them with mayoketchup or my great-grandmother’s special recipe, Lely’s Family Sauce.
Ingredients:
- Plantain(s)
- oil
- Tostonera
Methods:
- Prep the Plantains: Use fresh, green plantains. Peel them and cut them into thick rounds (about ½ or 1 inch thick).
- Heat the Oil: Fill a pan with enough oil to cover the bottom (about ½ inch deep). Heat over medium heat until the oil begins to shimmer or small bubbles form.
- First Fry: Carefully place the plantain slices in the pan (to avoid splashing the hot oil). Fry them for 5 to 10 minutes, flipping occasionally, until they are tender and light golden brown.
- Smash and Second Fry: (Note: Traditionally, you remove them here to smash them flat before a second fry to get them crispy!) * Serve: Once they are golden brown and crispy, remove them from the pan and place them on a plate lined with paper towels. Season with salt immediately. Serve with your favorite dip—I highly recommend mayoketchup or Lely’s family sauce!
