Habichuelas 🫘🍚

Serve over fluffy white rice!
Whether you call them habichuelas, beans, or frijoles, this is hands-down my favorite side dish. While they’re delicious enough to eat on their own, nothing beats the classic pairing of these savory beans served over a steaming bed of fluffy white rice.
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp Adobo
- 1 or 1½ tbsp Sofrito
- ½ tbsp of minced garlic
- 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce or (4 oz) can of tomato paste
- 1 tbsp of ground cumin
- Ham seasoning (Goya ham flavoring seasoning)
- 1 packet of Sazón ( Knorr or Goya of your choice)
- Beef or/and chicken bouillon ( to taste)
- ⅓ or ½ fresh onion, chopped
- Salchichón or ham, diced
- ½ cube potato (optional)
- 1 tbs of olive oil
- Salt and/or black pepper to taste, and optional
- Garlic parmesan ( optional)
Methods:
- Combine the Base: In a medium pot, add the beans (including the liquid) and a small amount of water (about half a can).
- Prep the Aromatics: Finely chop the onion. After cleaning your knife and board, dice the salchichón (or ham) into small pieces and add both to the pot.
- Add the Sauce: Add the tomato sauce (or tomato paste) to the mixture.
- Season: Stir in the remaining ingredients (Adobo, Sofrito, garlic, cumin, etc.). If you prefer more «saucy» beans, add a little more water at this stage.
- Simmer: Stir everything well and cook over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
- Serve: Enjoy these beans on their own or served over a bed of fluffy white rice
