Jugo de Acerola

Acerola is small in size but giant in flavor. Known for its high concentration of Vitamin C, this bright red juice is a staple of Puerto Rican childhoods. Its unique tartness and sweet finish make it incredibly refreshing, especially when served ice-cold.

This has been my favorite drink since I was a kid. My godmother (mi madrina) used to make it for me, and it was always delicious; nothing compares to her homemade touch! Now my mother makes it, and it tastes similar to my godmother’s.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Fresh Acerolas (rinsed and stems removed)
  • 1 quart of water
  • ½ to ¾ cup Sugar (adjust based on how tart the berries are)
  • Ice

Methods:

  • Blend: Place the fresh acerolas and water in the blender. Pulse for only a few seconds—you want to break the fruit apart without crushing the seeds, which can make the juice bitter.
  • Strain: Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher to remove the pulp and seeds.
  • Sweeten: Add the sugar to the pitcher and stir well until completely dissolved.
  • Serve: Pour over plenty of ice. For an extra refreshing kick, some people like to add a tiny squeeze of lime!
