Sangria

Written by

·

In Puerto Rico, a party isn’t a party without a big pitcher of Sangría. Unlike the Spanish version, our Sangría is slightly sweeter and usually ‘fortified’ with a splash of brandy or rum. It’s the perfect companion for a BBQ, a family gathering, or a sunny afternoon.»

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle (750ml) of Red Wine (Spanish Rioja or Cabernet Sauvignon works great)
  • ½ cup of Brandy or Puerto Rican Gold Rum
  • 1 cup of Orange Juice
  • ½ cup of Pineapple Juice
  • ¼ cup of Sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 can (12 oz) of Lemon-Lime Soda (like Sprite or 7-Up)
  • Fresh Fruit: Chopped apples, oranges, and lime slices.

Methods:

  1. The Fruit Soak: In a large pitcher, combine the chopped fruit and the sugar. Use a spoon to lightly press the fruit so it starts releasing its juices.
  2. Add the Spirits: Pour in the wine and the brandy (or rum). Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  3. The Juice Mix: Add the orange juice and pineapple juice. Stir again.
  4. The Rest: For the best flavor, let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 2 to 4 hours. This allows the fruit to «marry» with the wine.
  5. The Fizz: Right before serving, add the lemon-lime soda and a lot of ice.
  6. Serve: Pour into glasses, making sure everyone gets some of the wine-soaked fruit!
