The Mojito is the ultimate island highball. While its origins are Cuban, it has become a staple in Puerto Rico’s ‘chinchorreo’ culture. It’s crisp, refreshing, and the perfect balance of sweetness, citrus, and herbal mint.
Ingredients:
2 oz Puerto Rican White Rum (Don Q Cristal is perfect for this)
1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
2 tsp White Sugar (or 1 oz Simple Syrup)
6-8 Fresh Mint Leaves (Yerba Buena)
Club Soda or Seltzer Water
Crushed Ice
Garnish: A sprig of fresh mint and a lime wedge.
Methods:
Muddle: In a tall glass, add the fresh mint leaves, sugar, and lime juice. Use a muddler to gently press the mint. Tip: You only want to release the oils, not shred the leaves!
The Rum: Pour in the white rum and stir until the sugar has mostly dissolved.
Ice it down: Fill the glass to the top with crushed ice.
Top off: Add a splash of club soda.
The Mix: Use a long spoon to lift the mint from the bottom so the flavor distributes evenly.
Garnish: Top with a fresh mint sprig and a lime wedge.
